Top Anglican leader steps down after shocking abuse report surfaces
**Justin Welby** ended his decade-long leadership of Anglican Church due to historic abuse case findings. His time as Archbishop included major changes in church policy and memorable royal ceremonies
Justin Welby left his post as head of Anglican Church after an eye-opening report about past abuse came out on nov-7. The ex-oil worker turned religious leader couldnt escape questions about his knowledge of 80s summer-camps abuse scandal
The high-ranking churchman spent about 10 years trying to keep world-wide Anglican group together while dealing with hot-button issues: same-sex blessings and women priests (which made some church members very unhappy). His work included big royal events — like Queen Elizabethʼs funeral and King Charles crown ceremony
I believe it when people say I am the worst Archbishop in history
Before becoming top church leader Welby went to fancy Eton school; worked in oil business for 10+ years then switched to priest work in ʼ92. He had some personal stuff come up too — like finding out Churchillʼs secretary was his real dad about 8 years ago
During his time he did lots of different things:
- Made changes so women could be bishops
- Let churches give blessings to same-sex couples
- Put money towards fixing churchs past slave trade links
- Spoke up about poor people and climate problems
The Makin Report said Welby probably knew something about John Smythʼs bad actions back then; even though he said he didnt know till 2013 — this made him quit on tuesday saying he felt shame about churchʼs past safety problems
