Tourist deaths in Laos force government to track down fake alcohol makers
Six foreign tourists lost their lives in Laos tourist hotspot after drinking methanol-tainted alcohol. Local authorities started investigation while several embassies warned their citizens about drinks safety
In the tourist-loved town of Vang Vieng six foreign backpackers died from drinking alcohol with methanol (a toxic chemical used in industry). The victims were from different countries: two from Denmark two from Australia one from Britain and one from USA
The Lao government made its first statement this weekend saying its deeply-hurt by these deaths; the officials promised to find and punish people who made this bad alcohol. “We will do everything to find those responsible and bring them to justice“ the statement said. The government also sent its heart-felt words to the dead tourists families
The local police is now collecting proof and talking to witnesses in Vang Vieng – a small-town known for its laid-back vibe and pretty views. The problem with fake drinks and home-made spirits has been around in Laos for a while; several countries like Britain and Australia already told their people to be extra-careful with drinks there
The US embassy jumped in on friday with its own warning: telling Americans to watch out for methanol poisoning. They said people should:
- Buy drinks only from trusted shops
- Check bottles for signs of fake labels
- Avoid very cheap alcohol
- Look for broken seals on bottles
Its important to know that methanol isnt like normal alcohol – its a poison thats used in making stuff like fuel and bug-spray. When someone drinks it they can get really sick or even die
