Ukraine Launches Major Drone Attack on Moscow as Kursk Incursion Continues
Ukraine conducts extensive drone assault on Russian regions, including Moscow. Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces claim advances in Kursk. Indian PM Modi plans visits to Poland and Ukraine, potentially mediating in the conflict.
Ukraine has conducted a significant drone operation against Russia, targeting multiple regions including the capital, Moscow. Russian authorities report intercepting 45 drones across several areas, with the most substantial number, 11, shot down over the Moscow region. This assault marks one of the largest attempts to strike the Russian capital since the conflict began 30 months ago.
Sergey Sobyanin, Moscow's mayor, emphasized the effectiveness of the city's air defenses in preventing any drones from reaching their intended targets within the capital. However, the attack resulted in one fatality and two injuries in the Kursk region, as reported by local officials.
This drone operation coincides with Ukraine's ongoing incursion into Russia's Kursk region, which entered its third week on August 21, 2024. Col. Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ukraine's military chief, claims that Ukrainian forces have advanced up to 35 kilometers into Russian territory and captured 93 settlements since the operation began.
Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine's president, states that the incursion aims to establish a buffer zone to prevent cross-border attacks and disrupt Russia's military capabilities. However, the sustainability of this territorial control remains uncertain, especially as Ukraine faces challenges in the eastern Donbas region.
"There will be no peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv until Ukraine is completely defeated on the battlefield."
In a related development, Narendra Modi, India's Prime Minister, is set to visit Poland and Ukraine. This diplomatic mission could potentially play a role in mediating the ongoing conflict. Modi's trip to Kyiv will mark the first visit by an Indian prime minister since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations in 1992.
The situation in the Middle East remains tense, with Hezbollah launching over 50 rockets at an Israeli military base in the Golan Heights. This attack was reportedly in retaliation for an Israeli strike on a suspected weapons storage facility in eastern Lebanon. The exchange of fire has raised concerns about a potential escalation of regional conflict.
In Afghanistan, the Taliban continues to enforce strict interpretations of Islamic law. Recent reports indicate that over 280 members of the Taliban's security force were dismissed for failing to grow beards, while thousands were detained for alleged "immoral acts."
Amidst these serious developments, a lighter moment occurred in London when a German Navy ship played the "Imperial March" from Star Wars during a training stop, adding an unexpected soundtrack to the city's morning.
