UN rights chief pushes for answers after Bangladesh power shift
UNʼs top human rights official wants clear answers about recent violence in Bangladesh. Muhammad Yunus leads temporary government after Sheikh Hasinaʼs departure from power
The UNʼs top human rights official Volker Türk made a quick-but-important stop in Bangladesh this week checking how things are going after the big changes in power. His two-day visit (oct 29-30) focused on looking into what happened during the rough times before and after Sheikh Hasina lost her position as prime-minister
The situation in Bangladesh needs a good look-through — with lots of reports about problems during the shake-up period that changed the countrys leadership. Muhammad Yunus (who got a Nobel prize) is now running things as the head of a temporary set-up; hes trying to get everything back to normal
The high-ranking UN visitor made it super-clear: every single case of rights problems and deaths needs to be checked out properly. The temporary government has to deal with several tasks at once: keeping order making sure everyone follows the rules and getting ready for what comes next in the political system
All incidents must be thoroughly investigated‚ and those responsible must be held accountable
