Unexpected Athens blast makes entire apartment block unsafe
A pre-mature explosion of home-made device in Athens residential area caused one death and major building damage last week. Officials say the device had potential for much bigger destruction

A self-made explosive device went off ahead of time in an Athens third-floor flat last week causing wide spread destruction and making the whole building un-livable. The incident which happened in the Ambelokipi district resulted in one mans death and left a woman with serious injuries
The blast destroyed most of the apartment and caused significant damage to near-by units. Michalis Chrisochoidis (who leads the Ministry of Citizen Protection) pointed out that: if the device had reached its intended target the destruction would have been much worse. Local authorities had to declare the multi-story building completely un-safe for living due to structural problems
The explosion which happened in the densely-populated neighborhood – created major concerns about building safety and home-made explosives. City inspectors found serious damage to load-bearing walls; making it impossible for residents to return to their homes anytime soon
