EU leaders are meeting today to talk about making it harder for migrants to come to Europe. They want to send people away faster and check if they can stay in Europe before they even get here.
This is different from how things were done about 9 years ago‚ when lots of people came from places like the Middle East. Back then Angela Merkel said “We can manage that.“ Now‚ leaders want to keep people out more.
Some countries are already doing new things: Poland might stop letting people ask to stay for a while‚ Italy is checking people in Albania‚ and Germany is looking at who comes in more closely. These ideas would have seemed too much not long ago.
The EU made a new plan about 5 months ago‚ but it wont start for another year and a half. Ursula von der Leyen wants some parts to start sooner. She thinks its good to try new things‚ like what Italy is doing in Albania.
We must stay ambitious‚ including on our timeframe
Not everyone agrees on what to do. Spain doesnt like some of the new ideas. They want to be nice to people who come. But others think the new plans might make it hard for people to ask for help when they need it.
The meeting today shows that EU countries are still trying to figure out how to deal with people coming to Europe. They want to keep their countries safe‚ but also help people who really need it
