Venezuelan man caught in Guyana with guns, drugs jailed

Charged: Romel Marin

Three Venezuelan nationals were jointly charged for possession of firearms, ammunition, and narcotics.
The three men are Eliezer Vera, Romel Marin, and Alirio Jiminez. They all appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts where four joint charges were read to them for possession of 66.4 grams of cocaine and 64.7 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking, possession of two Beretta pistols and a Glock pistol without licences, and possession of 25 matching rounds of ammunition.

Charged: Romel Marin

During the hearing, Marin and Jiminez pleaded not guilty, while Vera admitted to the offences. As a result, Marin and Jimenez were remanded to prison, and Vera was jailed.
For the possession of narcotics charge, Vera was jailed for three years and fined $58,230; for the possession of the cocaine, he was jailed for a further three years and fined $99,600. The sentences will run concurrently.

Eliezer Vera

With respect to the possession of two Beretta pistols and a Glock pistol without a licence, he was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment and for possession of 25 round of matching ammunition, for one year. The latter sentences will run consecutively with his jailtime for drug trafficking.
The trial for Marin and Jimenez will commence on November 13.
The trio was arrested at about 17:27h on October 20 by Police ranks at Arakaka, North West District, Region One (Barima-Waini). (G9)
