Albanian election opens doors for millions of overseas voters this spring
Albanian president announces new voting rules for spring parliamentary election. First-ever chance for overseas Albanians to vote remotely with new e-voting and mail-in options
The President of Albania picked may-11 as the date for next years parliament vote making a big change in how voting works. Its the first time that albanians who live in other places can join the election process
The country has a unique situation: while only 2.4 million people live inside albania today the total number of possible voters is much higher — around 3.6 million (because of all the albanians living abroad). The new system lets overseas citizens take part in two ways:
- e-voting through special online system
- sending votes by regular mail
This change came after both main political groups worked together to make new election rules earlier this year. The reform shows how albania wants to include its far-away citizens in making important choices; even though they dont live in the country anymore their voice still matters
