Germany takes hard stance on Iran: Three consulates to close after citizen execution

Germany made a tough-call to close all three Iranʼs consulates while keeping its embassy open – a direct answer to Irans execution of a German-Iranian person. The move shows how bad things got between these countries

Our diplomatic relations are already more than at a low point

Annalena Baerbock‚ German Foreign Minister stated in New-York

The German govt had already done some push-back stuff earlier this year: they called back their ambassador and had a not-so-nice talk with Irans charge dʼaffaires (who got summoned to hear Berlins complaints)

Baerbock pointed fingers at Tehran saying theyʼre playing games with hostages; she thinks Iran used Germanys support for Israel in the Middle-east situation as an excuse to kill the person. Other German citizens are still held there – and the foreign ministry says its working non-stop to get them out

The foreign minister also wants the EU to do something big: put Irans Revolutionary Guards on its terrorist list; this would make things even more serious between Europe and Iran
