Indian mega-states hold elections today: What's at stake for Modi's party

Today millions of Indian citizens are heading to polling-stations in two key states - Maharashtra and Jharkhand - which could show how strong Narendra Modiʼs political influence remains

The west-indian state Maharashtra (the countrys economic power-house) has its capital in Mumbai: a mega-city known for both finance and movie-making. The ruling group there includes Modiʼs Bharatiya Janata Party working side-by-side with local hindu-nationalist friends

The voting process in mineral-rich Jharkhand looks different; this east-indian region currently has an opposition team in charge - with the Congress party leading the way. The stateʼs rich underground resources make it extra-important for Indiaʼs economy

Both states play big roles in Indian politics: Maharashtra brings lots of money and business power; while Jharkhand adds valuable minerals to the mix. Thats why todays voting (with its huge number of people taking part) will show if Modiʼs team can keep their power or maybe lose some ground
