Latest US-Mexico border numbers show unexpected pattern in migrant crossings

Latest data from border-control shows around 54k migrants crossed US-Mexico border in Oct 2024 which is a bit higher than last month but way lower than usual numbers

The drop comes after Joe Bidenʼs administration put new rules in place this summer: most people who cross without papers cant ask for asylum anymore. Mexico also helped out by doing more checks on their side (which happened after some back-and-forth talks)

Looking at the numbers: border agents used to catch about 160k people monthly in early-2024; now its way down. Compare that to when Donald Trump was president - around 71k monthly back in 2019. A border-patrol boss (who didnt want his name used) said: “we feel very confident in the strategy that were employing to manage this“

Kamala Harris wants even stronger border rules‚ while Trump keeps talking about immigration as election day gets closer. Its become a hot-topic for voters - especially Republicans. Harris says Trump messed up earlier this year when he helped kill a two-party deal that wouldve made borders safer

The government also made some new programs letting lots of people come in legally through something called emergency parole; Republicans dont like it and say its just a way to get around the law. They think Bidens team is stretching what theyre allowed to do
