Latin America's mega-port opens as regional leaders prepare for crucial meetings
A new Chinese-built port in Peru starts operations while Brazil gets ready for G-20 summit. Meanwhile Haitiʼs government faces major changes as airport closes and food crisis deepens
A brand-new $3.5-billion deep-water port complex (built with Chinese money) opened last week in Perus small city of Chancay. The facility — run by Cosco Shipping — will let bigger ships than Panama Canal dock there and cut South America-Asia travel time by about 2 weeks
The port comes as Peru shows signs of getting better after last years political mess: President Dina Boluarte stays in charge even with low ratings‚ and business looks good. The Transport Minister says they expect way more trade with China; Brazil wants to use the port too
