Mali's top official loses job after speaking against military leaders

In a sudden turn of events Choguel Maiga lost his position as Malis Prime Minister‚ as shown on state-run ORTM tv channel this wednesday

The removal comes after Maiga spoke against the military governments secret-making decisions about voting plans (which were supposed to happen in early-24 but got pushed back). Last week-end he made it clear: “Everything happens behind closed doors; without any input from prime-minister“

The military group which took control in back-to-back take-overs during 20-21 didnt like his words - they even had to skip this weeks minister meeting because of rising disagreements. Its worth noting that Maiga used to be quite supportive of the military leaders choices including their close ties with Russian forces

Before getting the top job about 3 years ago Maiga worked in different government roles: he managed trade under Amadou Toumani Toure and ran digital projects when Ibrahim Boubacar Keita was in charge; he also led the M5-RFP group that pushed against Keitaʼs leadership

By law‚ the temporary President Assimi Goïta must now work with whoever comes next to make a new government team
