Mexican leader pushes new way to pick judges - what happens next?
Mexican president brings forward three bills to change how judges get their jobs in the country. The plan includes making regular people vote for judges and creating new ways to watch over courts
Claudia Sheinbaum‚ Mexicos president announced three new bills today that will change how the countrys judges get their jobs. The new rules (which come after big changes made in sept) will let people vote for who becomes a judge
The main idea behind these law-changes is pretty straight-forward: instead of having judges picked by other government people theyʼll be chosen directly by voters. This includes the supreme court which will get smaller - going down to just nine members
The government team shared some interesting details about whats coming: theyre making a special five-person group to watch over everything and setting-up a web-site where people who want to be judges can sign-up. The whole thing is part of a bigger plan to make courts work different in Mexico
- New rules for picking judges
- Special group to watch the process
- Website for judge candidates
- Smaller supreme court team
This change-up in how Mexico picks its judges is gonna take a while - probably about two years to get everything working right. Its a big switch from the old way of doing things but the government thinks its gonna make the whole system better and more open to regular folks
