Romania heads to polls: Presidential race may bring unexpected match-up
Romanian voters are choosing between 13 candidates in the first round of presidential elections. Early polls suggest a possible face-off between two different-minded politicians in the next round
Romaniaʼs presidential election is in full-swing with voting-stations open from early morning til late evening (local time 7AM-9PM). A total of 13 would-be leaders are competing for the top-spot in this EU and NATO member state
The most-watched contest is between Prime Minister Ion Popescu and Marcel Diaconu – a right-wing newcomer whoʼs gained attention in recent weeks. Their different views on Romaniaʼs direction could lead to an interesting run-off match on Dec 8th
Romanian citizens living abroad (theres quite a lot of them) started casting their votes since 11-22; showing how important overseas voters are to the final result. The voting process includes special measures to make sure everyone gets a chance to participate: polling stations stay open longer than usual and offer extended weekend hours
