Romanian election cancelled after suspicious social-media boost of pro-Russian candidate
Romanian top court cancelled presidential election results yesterday due to evidence of foreign interference and campaign fund issues. Investigators searched properties today looking into illegal financing schemes
In a ground-breaking decision yesterday Romanian highest court cancelled the presidential election results which created a state-wide mess-up in this NATO member country. The court found proof of vote-tampering and non-clear funding sources
Investigators moved quick today with three property searches in Brasov (a city in central Romania); looking into sketchy money flows that might be linked to illegal campaign financing. The probe focuses on cash that went through complex money-laundering schemes before ending up in election activities
Calin Georgescu - a right-wing politician who dont like NATO - got way more votes than expected in Nov 24th election. Intelligence docs show his success came from odd TikTok activity: the app pushed his content through paid-for posts and special account networks. Its interesting that Georgescu said he spent zero money on his campaign
This is nothing but a coup
The situation got world-wide attention:
- US State Department pushed for clean elections without outside messing
- British Foreign Minister showed worry about Russian involvement
- TikTok said they treated Georgescu like any other political user
- Russia denied doing anything wrong
The whole thing messed up Romaniaʼs political setup - the second voting round set for tomorrow wont happen‚ and people are getting worried about their countryʼs pro-West direction and support for Ukraine
