TEAM Zimbabwe received a hero’s welcome at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport on Tuesday after bagging 11 medals at the World Martial Arts Championships that was held in England between October 20-22.

The two-member team — Wilfred Mashaya and his protégé Vincent Fambira — finished sixth on the 14-nation medals’ table after bagging eight gold medals, two silver and one bronze.

The two competed in eight individual categories and three team categories.

Both Fambira and Mashaya finished with three gold medals and one silver medal in the individual categories, after which the two scooped two more gold medals and a bronze model as a team.

The competition attracted 14 nations from around the globe, and these included hosts England, Ukraine, Wales, Germany, France, Hungary, Lebanon, Ireland, Scotland, Cyprus, Macedonia, Portugal, Spain and Zimbabwe.

Upon touching down at the airport, the two were greeted by scores of people that included top officials from the Zimbabwe Karate Union, fellow athletes and officials from various sports bodies.
