Mr. Dele Alake has stepped up in defense of his party’s flag bearer, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, over claims that he runs the city of Lagos as a godfather despite having left office nearly two decades ago, as Nigerians continue to question the moral character and integrity of the front runners in the race for the office of the Commander-in-Chief, a key figure in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Alake, who once held the position of Lagos’ Commissioner for Information under the Tinubu administration, argued that, in theory, godfatherism is not a bad thing, especially if it is used for the common good of the people in an interview on Africa Independent Television’s “Democracy Today” a few hours ago.
The APC leader claims that some cunning individuals are to blame for giving godfatherism a bad rep in the public’s eyes.
“This is really fascinating. What is fundamentally wrong with becoming a godfather, I ask you now? Is it not because some individuals malignly associated it with anything negative? Was Sir Ahmadu Bello, our esteemed sage, not a godfather? What does the term “godfather” mean? This individual develops future leaders. A godfather is someone who fosters the growth of others into great leaders.
Even the legendary Obafemi Awolowo and Ahmadu Bello created leaders. These men are hence godfathers. Due to the fact that he also produced leaders, the great Nnamdi Azikiwe can be considered a godfather. When you consider a godfather in the traditional sense, there is nothing inherently wrong with that.
Bola Ahmed Tinubu is therefore qualified to serve as a godfather since he has produced more leaders than any other candidate in the current race. Even the people he raised are doing extremely well in politics, as you can see. As a result, there is nothing negatively connotative about him serving as Lagos’ godfather. Everything is dependent on your viewpoint and motivation.
