A total of 20,000 trees of varied species were planted in the Kwadaso Municipality of the Ashanti Region to improve the ecosystem.
The species range from coconut, teak, guava, royal palm to mahogany.
Mr. Richmond Agyenim Boateng, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kwadaso, said the exercise was in line with the Green Ghana Project, being spearheaded by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to help improve the country’s lost forest cover.
“Tree planting is important as it helps in the sustainability of the environment,” the MCE told the Ghana News Agency (GNA), at Edwenease, on the sideline of a tree planting exercise.
The programme formed part of activities marking this year’s Green Ghana Day, celebrated on the theme, “Mobilising for a Greener Future.”
In all, a total of about two million trees seedlings of varied species are expected to be planted across the Ashanti Region in line with the Project.
Emphasising the importance of trees, the MCE explained that the varied species were critical to the sustenance of life on earth.
“The ecology and biodiversity cannot thrive without the availability of trees, which help in regulating one’s breath.”
Mr Agyenim Boateng noted that the Assembly in 2021 planted over 4,000 tree species, adding that more than 85 per cent of these trees were thriving.
He called on Ghanaians to involve themselves in the exercise to help the country recover its lost cover.
