Mr Godwin Kwame Dadzawa, the South Dayi District Chief Executive (DCE), has urged all to get involved in the Green Ghana Project to support the President’s vision.
He asked the citizens to see the Green Ghana Project as a divine call to save and protect the land God has bequeathed to the nation against any destruction.
Mr Dadzawa was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency after the district planted one acre of trees near the Assembly’s office, to mark this year’s Green Ghana Day.
He said the assembly had planned to plant 10 acres of trees this year as part of the exercise and that the land and seedlings needed for successful execution of the plan were also available.
The DCE noted that the current generation has a great responsibility to protect the environment for future generations and that trees are long term disaster management measure to mitigate impacts of disaster.
Mr Dadzawa said the wanton destruction of the forest cover of which trees formed a major component must not be left in the hands of politicians alone to address.
He stressed that the combative approach against the practice was a shared responsibility and implored people to stop attacking the Government for doing little to preserve the country’s forest cover.
The DCE called for stiffer punishments against people engaged in indiscriminate felling of trees to deter others from destroying the country’s vegetation cover.
Mr Dadzawa thanked all who participated in the exercise including traditional authorities, the police, the assembly members, students from Kpeve Senior High Technical School and other Basic Schools, staff of the assembly and the district chief imam.
Mr Enock Dzadzra, the District Director of Agriculture told the GNA that it was important to introduce tree planting to Basic School pupils for the younger generation to appreciate trees for an excellent environment.
He said evidence abounds that temperature in all the country’s ecological zones were rising whereas rainfall levels had been reducing with its patterns becoming erratic.
Mr Dzadzra said the district had been allocated 20,000 seedlings including Afram, mahogany, teak, iron wood tree, and bauhinia and they would be used for landscape planting, amenity, avenue planting, and afforestation.
