The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) on Friday began comprehensive COVID-19 impact assessment stakeholder consultation workshops around the country, with the inaugural workshop being held in Bulawayo, the second largest city of Zimbabwe.
Tourism is one of the worst-hit sectors by the pandemic due to travel restrictions and lower demand from tourists, resulting in a loss estimated at 690 million U.S. dollars to the national economy, according to the tourism satellite account launched by the Ministry of Tourism in March this year.
“Albeit the critical importance of these (COVID-19) measures, they led to substantial losses in investment, business, revenue, employment, livelihoods of communities and local economic development worldwide and Zimbabwe was no exception,” the ZTA said on Twitter.
It added that the project’s main thrust is to support and accelerate recovery while building resilience across various tourism segments, levels of development and demographics.
Tourism has long been a critical driver of Zimbabwe’s economy and the country boasts many magnificent sights that attract visitors from around the world. Enditem
