FIDE Chess Olympiad in Chennai, India: Team Guyana scores points in Round 9

In Round 9 of the ongoing FIDE Chess Olympiad, Guyana’s Open team scored 1.5 points against Suriname, while the Women’s team drew twice against Guam.
CM Taffin Khan drew his match with Surinamese FM Viresh Giasi, while FM Anthony Drayton (1928) was victorious over CM Romario Sanches (2066) to earn a point for the Open team. Drayton and Khan are each on 3.5 points.

The Open team is set to face Burundi, seeded at 173, in the next round. Players are Taffin Khan, Anthony Drayton, Loris Nathoo and Ethan Lee.
On the Women’s side, 12-year-old Anaya Lall drew her match with Guam’s Jasmine Ramas, earning herself a half-point, while, in a tense five-hour battle, Guyana’s Sasha Shariff forced a draw from Ruth Nacario, despite her opponent holding a winning position throughout the endgame.

Guyana’s Pooja Lam, Sasha Shariff, Jessica Callender and Anaya Lall are set to play next against Timor-Leste, seeded at 116.
Meanwhile, FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich has been re-elected for a second term in the presidential elections held on Sunday, August 7th.
The final round in this Olympiad will be played on August 9th at 10:00 IST at the Four Points by Sheraton Mahabalipuram Resort and Convention Centre. The Closing Ceremony follows at 16:00 IST.
