Twenty-four-year-old Ryan Pompey of Enmore, East Coast Demerara (ECD), who in 2019 was jailed for three years for robbery with violence, is back in court on a similar charge.
Robbery accused Ryan Pompey Arraigned before City Magistrate Annette Singh, he denied the charge, and was remanded to prison.
It is alleged that on August 6, at North Road, Georgetown, while armed with a knife, he robbed Shane Paul of $45,000 in cash.
Pompey claimed he was making his way to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) to treat his injuries when the hospital’s security guard informed him that someone had identified him as the person who had stolen their phone.
The Police Prosecutor objected to the accused being granted his pre-trial liberty by citing the serious nature of the offence, Pompey’s previous conviction, and the fact that he had been positively identified by the virtual complainant. According to the prosecutor, Pompey had also assaulted Paul during the robbery.
These objections were upheld by Magistrate Singh, and Pompey was remanded until August 15.
Pompey was sentenced in 2019 to three years’ imprisonment for robbery with violence.
He had pleaded guilty to robbing a man on Regent Street, Georgetown while making use of personal violence. Court facts had revealed that while the victim was waiting to board a minibus, Pompey had approached and relieved him of his cellphone and money, before pushing him to the ground.
However, while trying to flee, Pompey was caught by public-spirited citizens, who removed the stolen phone from his crotch and gave it to the victim before handing him over to the Police. (G1)
