The construction sector must be overseen in a better manner

Letters

DEAR EDITOR,

CRG extends our deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives in the construction sector.  The construction sector must adopt the first world safety standards available.

It is in our best interest to ensure that all companies in the sector are trained and certified to work from heights using lifelines and fall protection harnesses. The building inspectors should be required to review site preparations before allowing work to commence, and all permits should be linked to the required safety measures that have to be in place before work begins.

It is also the responsibility of the person hiring the construction company to ensure that all permits have been approved prior to work beginning. Our certified inspectors are those who will help us all save the lives of construction workers. Going forward, the involvement of the building inspectors should be embraced. We cannot afford to risk the lives of our fellow Guyanese due to expediency.

With concern,

Mr. Jamil Changlee,

Chairman
