BSJ workers threaten strike action

By Warren Bertram

Workers at the Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ) are threatening strike action if the management does not meet with the union representing the workers, Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU).

BITU President Kavan Gayle says the workers are dissatisfied with the current wage and benefits negotiations.

He adds that the union is also taking issue with the management "not operating with proper labour standards" by seeking to negotiate with the workers without involving the union, which is the bargaining agent.

The situation, he says, has caused heightened levels of frustration" among the employees.

Mr. Gayle says the management of the BSJ has been served a 72-hour warning to which it should respond to prevent industrial action.
