Dominica sets up investigative unit to probe arms trafficking

The government of Dominica has formed an investigative unit to probe matters relating to the trafficking of firearms and ammunition.

The unit will comprise representatives of the police force, customs and excise department and the Financial Intelligence Unit.

Minister for National Security and Legal Affairs Rayburn Blackmoore says the aim is to probe every element and perpetrator involved in the syndicate.

He says the government has partnered with regional and international entities to strengthen the technical competency of the unit.

Additionally the National Security Minister says a gun amnesty has been announced that will run from October 1, for one month, for the surrender of illegal firearms without legal jeopardy.
