Declaration on Migration & Protection signed at Summit of the Americas

Jamaica is among 21 countries from the Western Hemisphere which have signed a declaration that includes commitments to expand legal pathways for migrants and refugees, and more US funding to assist other countries in hosting them.

The Los Angeles Declaration on Migration and Protection was signed during Friday's last day of  the ninth Summit of the Americas.

US president Joe Biden, in his address, said unlawful migration was not acceptable.

As part of  its commitment to the migration declaration, the Biden administration plans to contribute $314 million in humanitarian aid, funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development and the State Department.

It also will provide H-2B non-agricultural seasonal worker visas to 11,500 nationals of northern Central American nations and Haiti.

Biden also announced stepped-up efforts, in conjunction with other countries, to combat human smuggling.
