Education Ministry shares details of draft national grooming policy

The Ministry of Education has shared details of its draft National Dress and Grooming Policy, which has been crafted from consultations with stakeholders in the sector.

Among the objectives of the new policy will be public awareness and the increased participation of stakeholders, to include students, in the developing of individual school policies.

Each school's policy will also have to be documented in line with the over-arching policy of the Education Ministry.

Dr. Steven Kerr, Director of the Policy Analysis and Research Unit in the Education Ministry, said schools will be given "autonomy within defined limits" and their rules should have a legitimate aim, and should be principle-based and appropriate to a school setting.

Dr. Kerr noted that the national policy will define how rules can be changed as well as the processes involved in airing grievances.

He said the aim is to have students comply with whatever guidelines are in place, adding that student compliance is also the parents' responsibility to ensure.

The draft policy standards were outlined during a virtual meeting with parents on Tuesday.
