Higher number of traffic tickets issued in 2022

The Police High Command is reporting a 60 per cent increase in traffic tickets issued to motorists for 2022.

Police Commissioner Major General Antony Anderson said the figure moved from 500,000 in 2021 to 720,000 tickets issued last year.

With more than one million registered vehicles on Jamaica's roads, he said the police's steps are meant to ensure public safety and to "stop people from doing things that will harm themselves or harm other people".

General Anderson said 67,000 of the traffic tickets issued were e-tickets.

But the Police Commissioner said stricter measures are needed to ensure more people pay traffic fines.

He noted that, currently, just 38 per cent of them are paid.

General Anderson said it is critical to public order for the rate of payment to be improved, and this will only happen if people know the matter will be dealt with as an offence if they do not pay.

Under the new Road Traffic Act, which takes effect on February 1, warrants will be issued for motorists who have unpaid traffic tickets after a given time.
