Jamaica's justice system gets J$1.3b boost

Jamaica's justice system has received a major boost from the Government of Canada, through the J$1.3 billion Social Justice (So-JUST) project.

The initiative is funded by the Government of Canada and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the Ministry of Justice.

Justice Minister Delroy Chuck is optimistic that the project will significantly strengthen certain areas of the justice system by increasing technology among other things.

He said the ministry also wants to improve the overall efficiency and ratings of all justice facilities by ensuring justice is "delivered in a very comfortable environment".

Additionally, some of the J$1.3 billion or Can$12 million from the project will go towards training more court reporters who will be able to assist in providing court records on a timely basis.

The So-JUST project will be implemented from 2023–2030.

The project will strengthen and promote a rights-based and gender-sensitive justice system that achieves equitable outcomes for all Jamaicans.

It will also assist in modernising the court's records management systems.
