Jamaican overstayer in Cayman caught with dead man's passport, awaits sentencing

A Jamaican man caught trying to leave Cayman on a murdered man's passport, after overstaying more than 10 years, has been remanded and will have to wait until November to hear his sentence.

Dennis Ramsay, who appeared in court on Tuesday, listened in silence as his attorney asked the judge to impose a favourable sentence.

Ramsay, a father of seven, is said to have no ties to Cayman.

A report in the Cayman Compass newspaper says the Jamaican entered guilty pleas on May 19 to one count of overstaying and one count of possessing an altered travel document.

This was three days after he was arrested at Owen Roberts International Airport by Customs and Border Control officials while attempting to board a flight to Honduras using a passport belonging to a man who was shot dead in March 2018.

Ramsay will return to court on November 7 for sentencing.

The magistrate said she needed additional time to contemplate her ruling on all the matters presented, and to produce a written ruling.

Ramsay is not thought to have been connected to the murder and is said to have paid CI$3,000 to obtain the dead man's passport.

On the charge of overstaying, the Jamaican faces a maximum fine of  $20,000 and imprisonment of up to five years.
