JLP accuses PNP of distractive comments regarding fraud at SSL

The report detailed discrepancies at the investment firm.

The PNP has criticised Finance Minister Dr. Nigel Clarke on his explanation that he was not aware of the report's existence until last week despite it being sent to his office.

But Dr. Chang says the PNP is politicising the issue and causing "contentious distractions", which is not in the best interest of the country.

"The police should be left to investigate the fraud. The to and fro discussion is inappropriate for a political party and I will maintain that position," he said, adding that Dr. Nigel Clarke was the one who "had to comment" in his capacity as Minister of Finance in order to reassure the country and maintain confidence in the financial system.

Dr. Chang was speaking to the media in Ocho Rios, St. Ann on Tuesday.

'Not true'

But the People's National Party has rejected Dr. Chang's statements, calling for him to show proof of his allegations in relation to the party and its supporters' comments on the government's handling of the fraud at Stocks and Securities Limited.

Dr. Campbell said the PNP asserts without any fear of truthful contradiction that it has been responsible, measured and careful in all public utterances on the SSL issue.

He maintained that there was ministerial delinquency on the part of the Finance Minister in not reviewing the 2019 report sent to his office on SSL.
