Justice Minister urges zero-tolerance approach to wrongdoing

By Kimone Witter

The Justice Minister has urged Justices of the Peace to adopt a zero-tolerance approach to wrongdoing.

Delroy Chuck said the Andrew Holness administration is taking this approach with the new Road Traffic Act and in its response to transport operators who have called for a traffic ticket amnesty.

"We as a government intend that our roads should become safe places. We are working diligently towards [the Act] and those who asking for 'bly', they won’t get it. When you commit and the police give you tickets, you must pay it up," he declared.

Mr. Chuck said the parish courts are overwhelmed, with 70 per cent of matters relating to traffic violations.

But he warned delinquent motorists that "the days of reckoning are coming".

Taxi and bus groupings are awaiting word on their calls for a plan to clear the millions of dollars in outstanding tickets owed by operators of public passenger vehicles.

The government has said there will be no amnesty for settling the outstanding amounts, however, Transport Minister Audley Shaw later said it was open to a possible payment plan.
