Local government elections unlikey - Chang

General Secretary of the Jamaica Labour Party, Dr. Horace Chang, says the local government elections, constitutionally due by the end of next month, are unlikely to be held.

Director of Elections, Glasspole Brown, told the Sunday Gleaner that the government has not approved the budgetary allocation needed to execute the election.

Mr Brown observed that, even if the budget is approved, based on the tight window, it is unlikely that the Electoral Office will have sufficient time to train workers and put in place measures to oversee the elections by the February 27 deadline.

In an interview with Radio Jamaica News, this afternoon, Dr Chang acknowledged that the Local Government Elections will not be held next month based on the challenges facing the economy. He noted that resources are being focused on restoring the strength of various institutions to pre-pandemic levels.

Dr Chang declined to state whether elections will be held later this year.

He said the call rests with Prime Minister Andrew Holness.
