Manchester farmers plea for help after crops destroyed by bush fire

Several farmers in Manchester are calling for assistance from the government to help them restart their operations.

Eleven farmers suffered losses after a bush fire got out of control and destroyed their farms at Spring Ground in the parish.

One of the affected farmers, Claire Maxwell, told Radio Jamaica News the destruction of crops and infrastructure is estimated at a total $26 million.

"Yes, thank God that our life has been spared, but we're asking that we get some support from the government so that we can get back on our feet," she begged.

The farmers also want the government to impose stricter penalties on those responsible for bush fires that get out of control and damage or destroy other people's properties.
