Most Jamaicans blame lack of good job opportunities, greed and corruption for crime - poll

Lack of good job opportunities, greed and corruption and poor economic conditions are being blamed as three main contributors to crime and violence in Jamaica.

This is based on the findings of the recently conducted RJRGLEANER Don Anderson poll.

As of August 14, Jamaica's murder tally stood at 938, compared to 911 during the similar period last year.

The St. James police division is leading the murder tally with 129 murders, followed by St. Catherine North with 92.

Next in line is the Westmoreland with 86 people murdered in that parish up to August 14.

But what are the contributors to the bloodletting?

That question was posed to 1,113 Jamaicans across the island.

Pollster Don Anderson said 59 per cent of those interviewed believe the lack of good job opportunities is the main contributor, while 56 per cent say greed and corruption.

He said 40 per cent of those interviewed suggested uncontrolled growth of gangs in the society is contributing to crime and violence, while 38 per cent blame politicians.

A further 35 per cent said it was because fathers were absent from the household, 31 per cent cited domestic violence, 28 per cent said there were too many bad role models and 21 per cent blamed inadequate policing.

Mr. Anderson explained that respondents' answers were unprompted and were recorded verbatim.

The field work was conducted between July 16 and 26.
