New law will deny bail to persons charged with murder or gun crimes - minister

Minister of Legal and Constitutional Affairs Marlene Malahoo Forte has hinted that updated laws are coming that will deny bail for persons charged with murder.

Mrs Malahoo Forte says the new Bail Act is to be tabled soon.

The minister told the House of Representatives on Tuesday that she had "wanted to table [the Act] today but we are revising the wordings of some clauses".

While she did not reveal much more regarding the updated piece of legislation, Mrs Malahoo Forte warned: "If you on murder charge, you cannot be at large; if you on gun charge, you cannot be at large."

The government has been hinting at the move for some time amid concern that persons on bail have been committing crimes.

However, a senior prosecutor, Adley Duncan, has contended that lawmakers are not at liberty to restrict persons' bail.
