No loss of job for NWC workers arising from public-private partnership - Samuda

Senator Matthew Samuda, who has portfolio responsibility for water, has sought to assure employees of the National Water Commission (NWC) that there there will be no job loss arising from the public-private partnership project to construct the Rio Cobre water treatment plant.

In his contribution to the State of the Nation Debate in the Senate on Friday, Mr. Samuda responded concerns raised that NWC workers could be laid off with the construction of the treatment plant.

He stressed the need for private sector involvement, given the cost of the project and the strain it would be for the NWC to take on the construction itself.

The announcement of plans for the plant was made last week as a means of improving the provision of water, especially in the Kingston Metropolitan Area.

The construction period for this project is approximately two years.
