The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) says the longstanding issue of garbage pile-up across Jamaica should be eased by November with the purchase of additional trucks.
Several communities have been complaining for months about garbage pile-up due to non-collection.
There have been calls for the government to address the issue, which could affect public health.
NSWMA Chairman Dennis Chung said 50 trucks are to arrive in the country in November.
He said additional steps are being taken in the interim to minimise the garbage pile-up.
"The government has asked us to look at it and see what are some of the things we can do.... It's obviously going to require some funding, so we're going to have to put something together. But we're trying our best to build the resources that we have and the government is giving us the support that we need," he said, without revealing specifics.
Despite the limited number of garbage trucks being a contributor to the garbage pile-up, Mr. Chung argued that another major factor is how people dispose of their waste.
