NSWMA struggles with defective trucks as garbage complaints mount

The inclement weather has intensified complaints for the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) to speed up the collection of garbage from residential areas and main roads.

There is particular concern that garbage left on streets could end up in drains, leading to flooding.

However, NSWMA Executive Director Audley Gordon says, while the authority continues to operate a 24-hour collection service, the few available trucks are not holding up.

Where the entity would normally be able to import parts within a week to fix defective trucks, Mr. Gordon lamented that shipments have slowed and it now takes up to three months for parts to arrive.

Garbage collection has become a vexed issue across the country, with communities in most parishes complaining of a pile-up of waste.

The NSWMA has said a shortage of trucks has contributed to the slow pace of garbage collection.

The entity said it will receive some new trucks by year-end.
