Quick debt payment will result in more funds for social welfare - Clarke

Finance Minister Dr Nigel Clarke has rejected claims from the Parliamentary Opposition that the Government is seeking to reduce Jamaica's debt faster than necessary.

The Government has said it is projecting to bring public debt to below sixty per cent of Gross Domestic Product by March 2027, a year earlier than the target set out in the fiscal rules.

During his closing presentation in the Budget Debate on Tuesday, Dr Clarke addressed the suggestions put forward by Opposition Leader Mark Golding who accused the Government of not doing enough to boost social security.

Mr Golding said money allocated to debt payments could be better channelled into providing relief to Jamaicans battling high cost of living.

In response Dr. Clarke countered that debt servicing will release more funds to contribute to social welfare.
