Sentencing delayed for eight who pleaded guilty to cocaine charges

By Clinton McGregor

The seven Americans and one Jamaican who on Tuesday pleaded guilty to cocaine trafficking charges before the St. Ann Parish Court will have to wait a bit longer to know their fate.

At Friday's scheduled sentencing hearing, prosecutors again told the presiding judge that the forensic certificate from the government laboratory was still outstanding.

The judge, noting that the certificate was an important document to the case, rescheduled the sentencing hearing for next Thursday, December 8.

All eight were remanded.

The eight were caught attempting to smuggle 17 kilograms of cocaine with a street value of $130 million onto a cruise ship docked in Ocho Rios, St. Ann, last month.

The police reported that all eight were passengers who disembarked the vessel which arrived in Ocho Rios from Miami, Florida.

As they were attempting to re-board the vessel for departure, anomalies were detected in their luggage. A search was conducted and the drugs found.
