Telecoms firms taking steps to prevent sale of stolen phones

By Racquel Porter

Cellular phone thieves will not be able to access local mobile networks by early 2023.

Telecommunications company Digicel says it is collaborating on an industry solution to make this possible.

Speaking with Radio Jamaica News on Thursday afternoon, Elon Parkinson, Public Relations and Communications Manager for Digicel, said the move represents a significant step in an industry-wide effort to prevent the sale of stolen phones.

"We’re working towards an industry collaboration on this matter over the next couple of weeks and we expect to have it in place early 2023. And this will allow for customers to be assured that once they report a stolen device to their network operator, they can also be assured that that device will be blocked on all networks in Jamaica," he explained.
