ZOSOs extended by another 60 days

The House of Representatives has approved another sixty-day extension of the Zones of Special Operations established in seven communities.

ZOSOs are in place in Mount Salem and Norwood, St. James, Savanah-la-Mar, Westmoreland,  August Town, and Greenwich Town, St Andrew and Parade Gardens and Denham Town, Kingston.

National Security Minister Dr Horace Chang told the House of Representatives on Tuesday that there have been positive outcomes from the ZOSOs.

He said data confirms that the zones are contributing to a reduction of risk factors, increasing the competencies of residents and improving the prospects of the beneficiaries.

The resolution for the extension will now go to the Senate.

Meanwhile, during the House debate, Opposition Leader Mark Golding called for the timeline in the legislation governing the life of the ZOSOs to be amended.

Mr Golding argued that the continuous need to seek an extension after 60 days is counter productive.

In response, National Security Minister Dr Horace Chang said the statute is being examined by the Attorney General and amendments will be tabled in Parliament shortly.
