3,000 Liverpool fans expected at Champions League final screening party

PETALING JAYA: More than 3,000 Liverpool fans will be “partying” at the KL Getaway Mall when their club takes on Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final in Paris tonight.

A spokesman for the event organiser said all tickets for the event have been snapped up with fans coming from as far as Singapore, Sabah, and Sarawak.

Ridzal Ismail of MJ Event said despite the match being shown here at 3am (Sunday morning) Malaysian time, fans are still willing to come out and watch the final in such large numbers.

He believes it is because they have been deprived of match-day gatherings over the last two years as a result of the Covid-19 restrictions.

“This is going to be a gala event with a lucky draw and quiz sessions among others beginning at 10pm and going right through to 3am tomorrow when the match starts. We believe that Liverpool fans have been waiting for this moment hoping to see the giants lift a third trophy this season,” he told FMT.

He said the winner of the lucky draw will win an all-expenses paid trip to watch a Liverpool match next season at Anfield, adding that the value of the prize is RM12,000 and that it is sponsored by English firm Matchday Affairs Pte Ltd.

“The fans are paying RM40 each for the event tonight. We have taken all precautions to ensure everything goes smoothly to avoid any incidents,” Ridzal said.

Meanwhile, a representative from Liverpool FC Fans in Malaysia said this would be the biggest gathering of Liverpool fans for a live telecast at a single venue.

“We expect the celebrations to continue long after the match if Liverpool wins its third cup of the season,” Zainudin Khair said.

He said the last time they held such a gathering was in 2019 when Liverpool defeated Tottenham Hotspurs in the UEFA Champions League final. “At that time, about 2,300 fans came to watch our team win.”
