More teachers apply for less popular subjects

THE Education Ministry’s efforts to recruit teachers for less popular subjects has seen results as several of the vacancies have been filled this year, reported Sin Chew Daily.

According to Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon, several subjects such as Moral Studies, History, Counselling, and Design and Technology received more applications.

He added that those who did not get the job “have not been rejected” but that there were not enough vacancies for the subjects they chose.

He said that in the latest recruitment, there were 300 applicants who passed the Teacher Candidates Qualification Test and attended the interview with the Education Service Commission. Only 203 o ut of the 300 were hired.

Dr Mah, added there were three subjects - Visual Arts, Physical Education and Music - where the ministry had failed to recruit enough teachers.

Asked if the candidates who did not make the cut could be reallocated these three subjects, Dr Mah replied in the negative, explaining that this was because the three subjects required special qualifications.

This recruitment drive was part of the ministry’s one-off initiative to draft 18,702 teachers which began in July 2021. To date, a total of 13,770 teachers have been recruited.> Martial arts superstar Jackie Chan made a startling revelation that during the heyday of the Hong Kong film industry when local triads held sway, some actors were forced to perform at gunpoint, reported China Press.

“In that era, there was so much darkness in the Hong Kong entertainment scene. Some criminals were so bold that they would point a gun at an actor and tell them to start acting,” he said on a TV programme recently.

The 1980s and 1990s saw the rise of Hong Kong films, most of which were funded by organised crime.
