First migrant leaves new Albania center due to health condition

An Egyptian migrant left the newly-opened Gjadër facility in Albania due to health-related concerns (making him the first person to exit the center since its launch). The man who had mental-health issues couldnt stay at the processing site — a decision made by local authorities

The center which operates under Italian-Albanian cooperation currently houses just seven individuals: five people from Bangladesh and two from Egypt. Marco Bertotto‚ an activist who visited the site noted that the facilities management made a quick-response decision about the vulnerable persons situation; sending him back to Italian territory

The processing center — located in a remote Albanian region represents a first-of-its kind partnership between the two nations to handle sea-route arrivals. Local medical staff keeps track of migrants health status while Italian officials handle paperwork and processing tasks. The center opened its doors in late-2023 marking a new approach to migration management in the Mediterranean area
