Zakat Fund pays tuition fees for 6,000 needy students in UAE

More than 6,225 needy students in the UAE have benefited from the Zakat Fund's 'Read' Project since the beginning of this year, an official has said.

The fund has spent Dh10.6 million to pay the tuition fees and other school expenses for the students of different nationalities. These students are identified by the fund in coordination with education authorities, and the funding is based on the social and economic circumstances of the students.

Abdullah bin Oqeidah Al Muhairi, Zakat Fund secretary-general, said the Read Project is one of the key initiatives carried out by the fund since its inception. "It aims to help families overcome financial difficulties and provide a secure atmosphere for them so that they won't be worried about their study, giving them the opportunity to focus on their academic achievements," he said.

The fund has allocated a budget for this project to cover the costs of learning for children of poor families.

"Through the Read Project, the fund provides all the academic requirements needed by the students after our social research committee makes sure that their guardians are facing financial difficulties and unable to meet the school expenses," said Al Muhairi. He added that the fund has handed out computers and laptops to poor students to help them attend online classes during the remote class system.

He advised needy students and parents to visit the fund's website for details of the assistance being provided by the organisation and apply for education support with required documents.
