Afghan Journalist Wins Prestigious Emmy Award

The Emmy Award, often considered the equivalent of the Oscars for media, was awarded to Sanjar Sohail, the owner of the “Hasht-e-Subh Daily” newspaper from Afghanistan, and two New York Times journalists from the United States.

The Emmy Award was presented to recipients during a Wednesday in New York ceremony.

“Hasht-e-Subh Daily” reported that Sanjar Sohail, the owner of this media outlet, and two New York Times journalists were selected for this award due to their collaborative investigative reporting on the detention, torture, and killing of former military personnel during the seven months following the rule of the Taliban in Afghanistan.

This award was presented in the category of “Best News Analysis: Editorial Perspective” to these three journalists, marking the first time a journalist from Afghanistan has received this award.

The investigative report by “Hasht-e-Subh Daily” and The New York Times, published both in video and text formats on March 12, 2022, seven months after the fall of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, garnered international attention.

According to Sanjar Sohail, being nominated for the prestigious Emmy Awards and winning an investigative report can again draw international media’s attention to Afghanistan and the harrowing situation of women and former security personnel.

The Emmy Award is an American award for television productions, often regarded as the media equivalent of the Oscars. It has a history dating back to 1949 and enjoys international recognition and prestige.
