Explosion Heard At Ammunition Depot in Central Greece

Explosions were heard Thursday during a wildfire nearby at an ammunition facility in the coastal town of Nea Aghialos in central Greece, According to official TV ERT.

The ammunition depot belonged to the Greek air force; ERT cited anonymous sources.

In light of the country’s ongoing wildfire crisis, evacuation orders have been issued for a community close to Volos, a fire service spokeswoman told AFP on Thursday.

According to Reuters, Italian firefighters put out around 1,400 fires between Sunday and Tuesday, including 650 in Sicily and 390 in Calabria, the southernmost region of the peninsula, where a bedridden 98-year-old man perished when a fire consumed his home.

“Part of the ammunition warehouse at the air force barracks in Nea Anchialos is on fire, and an explosion has taken place,” Yannis Artopios said, adding that three helicopters and seven planes were on the scene to put out the fires, which had been burning since Wednesday.
